Clarissa inquired about the control he had over his power, and he turned his head to look out over the gently swaying grass of the field, with a thoughtful smile.
"My power requires a constant act of will." He explained, "It's all about doors, really. Most powers have the door open between the rooms of restraint and use, and will flit between them erratically until they learn to control their ability. With me, I have to choose to open that door and walk through." It was one of those abstract analogies that he so loved to use. He found that a 'door' model came in handy for explaining most aspects of his power. Otherwise it just became complicated to anyone that hadn't lived with it for nine years.
"That's not to say there aren't certain times when the door flies open and I get sucked through." He added, looking back to his friend. "That happens to the best of us, at some point or other. But for the most part, yes, I can control it."
Evidently tired of talking about himself for now, he glanced back at the lake, and then back to Clarissa. He raised a hand into the air and motioned for her to stand beside him. Next to the lake. "Look here." He said, and pointed to something in the water.
It was a white rectangle, lying just below the surface of the water, and apparently attached to the edge of the lake. As the water level rippled slightly with the movements of the fish the water lapped over the rectangle peacefully. "Know what that is?" He posed, his enigmatic smirk as curious as ever.

"You're lucky," she commented with a slightly resentful look and shrug. "It must be nice to have had control over whether people knew you were a freak or not. Or are a freak, I guess." She hadn't even realized what she was doing when her power had first started to show, and she was pretty sure that she'd give anything to have a power that didn't automatically appear at the most random and unfortunate of times.
She followed Abe when he called her over, and suddenly Clarissa felt quite stupid. Was she supposed to know what the nameless white thing was? Was she just not thinking straight, and that's why it held no meaning at all to her? Sometimes she felt really stupid when someone else knew something that she didn't. Not that she really had any right to be resentful of other people's knowledge, because maybe if she attended school more she would have the same information stored in her brain as Abe did. "No, I cant say I do," she finally said after staring at the water and the white object for a few seconds.

I’ll travel the SUB-ZERO TUNDRA I’ll BREAK GLACIERS and FROZEN LAKES -*-*-*- "Of course you don't." Abe declared, looking at Clarissa with a suddenly furrowed brow. "Why would you?" He looked at her uncertainly as if she was a complicated mathematical equation that he was intent on figuring out. Then he shook his head and his questioning frown disappeared.
Moving around her to stand on the other side, he continued to point down at the white rectangle. "That," He said, "Is a step." This was his favorite part of this particular dreamplace. His enthusiasm showed in his smile. "We're going to step under." He told her, and, without warning, placed a black-shoed foot on the white rectangle and left the edge of the lake to stand on it completely. It wasn't that big, so it didn't look like it should be quite so stable, but it was rigid and didn't move at all as he stepped onto it. The water of the lake lapped at his shoes.
He jigged a little bit with excitement, splashing water where he stood. "Come on, let's go!" He grinned, like some sort of ridiculous cartoon character. He stepped backward off the rectangle but only fell a short way into the water behind it before coming to a stop - obviously stood on the next step down. The water now came up to his thighs. "Don't worry, it's not cold!" He assured her, as if that was the main thing she'd be worried about right now.

Had she mentioned how extremely weird this kid was? He looked at her as though she were a specimen in some lab experiment he was intent on doing to the best of his abilities, not another human being. Sometimes she wouldn't mind being a telepathic, though she adored her own ability, just so that she could get into the minds of people like this guy. Sure she might get frustrated with the idiocy, or what she might view as idiocy, behind their calculating stares, but it would be worth it to at least catch a glimpse into their thoughts.
"U-under?" As soon as the word registered in Clarissa's brain, every instinct of her body was screaming at her to run the hell away from this kid, or wake up. Yeah, waking up would be good. She could easily catch up on her sleep the next day, during school hours when Abe would be in class studying or working on some project and therefore unable to invade her dreams and try to drown her like this. He had to be crazy! Sure, this was a dream, but bad things happened in dreams all the time. You fell from huge buildings, you saw your parents get shot, you saw a car crash relived time and time again in your memory or go through the experience of a week in the hospital countless times. Just because this was a dream didn't mean that it was a perfect dream world, and Clarissa didn't want to take the risk of this quickly turning into a nightmare by following him into the water. "Abe, I... I really don't think I should. I mean, maybe I should... I should just leave or something, and... yeah. I should wake up. Or leave. Or... or something." It was extremely unusual for Clarissa to become this nervous, or at least show that she was this nervous, but when it came to water she didn't care.

I’ll travel the SUB-ZERO TUNDRA I’ll BREAK GLACIERS and FROZEN LAKES -*-*-*- Clarissa's wavering tone did nothing to put Abe off the idea that they were going to descend into the lake. In fact, her hesitance seemed to present him with more of a challenge.
"Oh come on..." He whined, "Don't be such a baby. It's just a bit of water." He took another step backward, and dropped down once more, the water rising up to his stomach. The steps were quite high up from one another, apparently.
The dream manipulator laughed again. "Are you scared?" He asked disbelievingly. "You're scared!" He decided, and swept an arm around, gently splashing water at her from where she stood at the edge of the lake. He seemed to be getting more childish by the second.
"If it's the drowning thing you're worried about, you don't need to, you know. Look - you can pinch your nose and close your mouth and you won't suffocate." He demonstrated, pinching his nose between two fingers and clasping his other hand over his mouth. He waited for a little while, not quite long enough to prove his point, and then removed them. He did not gasp for air. "So even by dream logic," He went on, "Going under water should be no problem. And even if it was," He tilted his head sympathetically, and from his tone it was hard to tell if he was being sincere or sarcastic. "Do you really think I would let you drown? Come on. It's me." Apparently the fact that he had only known Clarissa for a day did nothing to change the fact that he thought that 'It's me' would inspire her to trust him. It was the kind of thing he said a lot to people who were doubting him, but it never occurred to him that it only really worked when people knew him relatively well.
Regardless, he looked at her with his best pleading puppy-dog eyes, which was strange given the alien blue colour of them at the time.

Her? Scared? Scared of water? Millions of people swam in water every day. It kept people alive. Without water everyone would die. No one would drink, no one would clean themselves, disease would overthrow the world within months. The apocolypse would be around immediately if water suddenly disappeared. It was a basic necessity of life. To say, or even imply that Clarissa was afraid of the harmless liquid was ridiculous. ...ly true, that is. The girl who had three tarantulas in her bedroom, lived out on the streets with fellow thieves and murderers, and spent most of her time in a forest some others dared not go near because of tales it was haunted, was petrified at the thought of water. If Abe ever told anyone, she'd kill him. That was no joke or attempt at humor. She seriously would.
"It's not drowning so much as it is my body being pulled away by a current and never being found ever again." She wasn't sure why that terrified her so much. Just a childish little nightmare idea. It wasn't like she was close with anyone else that would miss her if she was swept away without any warning. But she still did not like the water and the finality that came with never being seen again. Somehow it seemed to her that dying with her body being found would be immensely better.
But there was that huge, puppy dog eyed look on his face that made her shift uncomfortably. She usually wasn't easy to push over, but she felt bad. Here was this kid who'd taken the time to follow her into her dreams when he could have been doing whatever he wanted just to demonstrate his power to her. It would be really bitchy to say no and leave, and while she usually didn't have a problem with being bitchy she knew that she might very well regret this if she went away now. So, after a moment and a very hesitant sigh, she took a step closer to the water and nodded. "Fine."

I’ll travel the SUB-ZERO TUNDRA I’ll BREAK GLACIERS and FROZEN LAKES -*-*-*- After his prompting, Abe gave Clarissa the moment she needed to finally agree, though her reluctant sigh didn't say much for her confidence in him. For a second there he had actually thought she was going to turn and leave. That would have been a major letdown, wouldn't it? Luckily, all she needed was a bit of encouragement to talk her into it.
"You really shouldn't give in to peer pressure so easily, you know." He offered unhelpfully. Then, instead of extending a hand to help her onto the first step, like a true gentleman, he jumped onto the next step down, creating a splash. The water was up to his shoulders, and it took him a moment to swivel round and face her again.
"Follow me!" He said and disappeared entirely below the blue surface. A second or two later, he reappeared, his hair drenched, and smiling broadly. "Hey," He said, "You ever get that sinking feeling?"
Then he laughed. Then he was gone again.

Peer pressure. Ha. She never bent to peer pressure. She never stuck around others enough to bend to peer pressure. She wasn't a social butterfly, and so she didn't relate well with peers, and if you don't relate well with peers you can't be pressured by them. She could still say no. She could still figure some way to wake up and go away and never speak to this nutcase ever again, but for some reason she didn't. She watched with wide eyes as he sunk below the water, disappearing from her view with a slight ripple of the surface, nothing more.
She was being an idiot about this. It was a dream, nothing more. She wasn't in any danger. She took a step down, letting the chilly water wash around her feet. Deep breath. Another step. Another deep breath. Another step that left her head sticking out of the water. A huge deep breath. Another step. And then she was underwater.

The white rectangle steps continued down to the depths of the water. Abe was stood on one a little way down, and he looked back up when Clarissa entered the lake.
At least, it had seemed to be a lake from the outside. Under the surface of the water, the area seemed to go on forever, like they were somehow now under the waves of the ocean. It was so deep, the steps just kept going down, and from their point at the top of them they could see everything for miles around. Where the steps did eventually end was what seemed to be an underwater city, constructed of large white towers and smaller buildings made of coral. Precious somethings glittered in the light that streamed from the surface of the water, even from so deep below. From this point, Abe could see the large archways and paths that wound through the city he had constructed such a long time ago. Apart from the spread of the white and coral city, the sea floor was completely bare. Every now and then what appeared to be a tiny manta ray would sift through the sands, and then be still again.
These manta rays, if that was what they were, were not the only fish down here either - fish and amphibious creatures that were not visible from above suddenly surrounded the two of them. They were every imaginable shape and size and flavour. Abe reached out one hand (the other was once more casually in his pocket) and his fingers brushed against a fish with brightly glowing eyes as it swam gently by.
"I can make them leave, if they annoy you." He remarked, in reference to the fish that he watched with the kind of deep appreciation that replaces awestruck wonder after it grows old. "But they are harmless. Quite friendly, actually, most of them." He looked back up to Clarissa once more, with a wise smile. "You can talk. You don't have to worry about air. In fact, I would highly suggest that you don't worry about air. Or about the current dragging you off. If you do, I'd have to rescue you, and I'm not sure I'm the rescuing type. I quite sure you're not the type to be rescued, anyway..." His rambling had turned into something to fill the silence while he waited for her reaction to his ancient underwater kingdom.
