( O V E R A L L ) Atticus is, at first glance, a cold person. He grades students harshly, treats each new class with barely enough civility to get by, and prefers to spend his time reading instead of socializing. However, this is only a first glance. Anybody who spends time in his class will quickly learn otherwise.
Mr. Cromwell tries his hardest to be a fair teacher. At the beginning of each term, he gives each of his classes the same speech. "If you want my respect, you'll earn it by giving me yours. Come to class on time and prepared. Don't be disruptive or rude, and give the other students the same opportunities to learn that you're being given. Do your best work in my class, every day, and we'll get along fine." The students that heed his warning and try to learn often come to love him. Atticus has a sense of humor, and if he likes the majority of the class, he'll usually let it liven up his lectures.
Outside of class, he's much more relaxed. If a student wants to talk to him about anything, his door is always open, and he occasionally hosts movie nights or video game tournaments in his classroom, since the students aren't supposed to go off-campus. This is about the extent of his social activity, though, and he prefers to spend his time doing something educational, like reading or watching Discovery Channel.

( O V E R A L L ) Atticus was born to middle-class parents in Seattle, and had a happy early life with his younger sister, Naomi. Both children exhibited special powers at an early age, with Naomi controlling earth and Atticus controlling ice, but their parents were very accepting, and almost proud to have "special" children in the family. Despite a few incidents in public, mostly during snowball fights with his friends, he was never really bothered about his abilities. Most of his friends were accepting, and the ones that weren't didn't remain his friends for long. The main issues he had appeared in the summer, when he would accidentally chill the pool, and in winter, when there was snow on the ground. Still, they generally laughed it off, and he got through elementary and middle school without facing any major prejudice.
While in high school, he met Alyson, and they spent two years dating. After graduation, he went on to spend two years in the military to pay for college, while Alyson went straight to classes. However, when he returned, they found they were still in love with each other, and married once she'd graduated with a business degree. Even though Atticus was still in college, the two immediately had a son, Alexander. Both had always wanted a child, and they couldn't have been happier.
His powers were still around, and though he'd learned to control them a bit better than he had in his early years, there were still occasional missteps. Atticus almost lost a teaching job when he flash-froze the coffee in the teacher's lounge during a heated debate, but since no harm had been done, he stayed in the position. Even with the rare accident, he was never ashamed of his powers. Until Atticus was 38, everything was going perfectly.
Then, one night, he was awakened by a phone call. Alyson and Alexander had been driving back from visiting Alyson's parents. Atticus, sick with the flu, had stayed home with the dog. The car skidded out on a patch of ice and flew off the road. Both were killed on impact.
Left alone with only his dog for company, Atticus applied at Power's Academy. He'd been debating whether to apply for the job for some time, since it was some way away from their home, but with his wife and son gone, he packed up and moved off to a new life.
