The day couldn’t have been any better for Tessa. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, for one. Summer had faded into fall and there was a new briskness to the air. She liked it a lot more than she did the merciless heat of summer. All of her homework that had been assigned on Friday was done and ready to turn in, allowing her to enjoy the day without worrying about a stack of papers to do before the first bell rang on Monday. She had even gotten a phone call from her sister, Marissa, that morning. The two had chatted for an hour about various things; how the school year was so far for Tessa, Riss’ life as a newly married woman, how the horses on the ranch were doing, and everything else the girls could think to speak of. The teenager had loved it and her day had only gone uphill from there.
Like she did almost every day, she had found a little time to stop by the gym. Doing some volleyball drills had provided a great workout. Her serves and spikes were getting better by the day, she loved it, and she was staying fit. What more could you ask for in a hobby? But it had grown tiresome after an hour or so, so she had returned to her dorm room, grabbed a book, and headed for the front yard. She had never really spent much time there, seeing as she usually hung around the forest for her outdoors fix. The chances of running into someone out there were slim. That’s how she liked it. She never trusted herself outside. All it would take was catching the right scent and not being prepared, and she would be on the prowl in the form of some feline or canine predator in a matter of seconds. Not only was she worried about the safety of the people that might be around her, but also what they would think of her ‘animalistic side’, as she called it. It was just so savage and, well, weird. Sure, it seemed silly to consider yourself strange in a school for kids with superpowers, but she couldn’t help it. She didn’t want others to see her darker side…as cliché as that might sound.
This afternoon was different. She had gathered the courage to sit on the well-kept lawn and enjoy a good book. So, here she was, strolling toward the green grass with a worn copy of “To Kill a Mockingbird” in her hand. A black-and-white striped hoodie and her favorite pair of skinny jeans were enough to keep her comfortable in the delightfully chilly September weather. Her dark brown hair fell freely in its natural loose curls, extending well past her shoulders. She looked perfectly content as she picked a good spot and sat down and opened up the book. The first time she had read it had been in eighth grade. It had taken her a few chapters, but the piece of literature had won her over. Since then she had started and finished To Kill a Mockingbird twice. It might have seemed silly to read a book multiple times like that, but she loved it. Atticus was definitely her favorite character. He was so wise and each time she read it, it was like she noticed a quote by him that she hadn’t seen before.
After scanning over a couple of chapters she had already seen several times, her mind began to wander away from the story. The scents and sounds of surrounding environment were much too distracting. She gave up on reading any more of the book and placed it down beside her. A gaggle of Canadian Geese had stopped to rest on the other side of the yard. Their smell wasn’t at all appetizing, but she watched them in the same manner that a house cat would watch a bird through a window. They were so interesting to her. Hell, just about everything in nature fascinated her. Something else caught her attention. This time, it did appeal to her stomach. A pair of deer was somewhere nearby. She sat up a little straighter, turning her head to search for her favorite type of prey. There they were. The two stood further away than they thought, well off the lawn, but the wind still carried their scent right to her. For a brief moment, she almost let herself go after them. It didn’t look like anyone else was around. But…no. She couldn’t risk it. Someone spotting her in action could have humiliating results. She held her breath for as long as she could and looked down at the cover of her book. All she needed was a distraction until the stupid animals wandered off. After taking their sweet time, they finally disappeared into the distance and far away enough for Tessa to calm down. It was hard to ignore that demanding little voice in her mind, but it was something she had to do.
Not wanting to test her self-control again, she made herself tune out the rest of the wildlife. Perhaps it would be best if she just gave up and returned to her room. No, she thought, I can do this. She laid back on the grass, staring up at the sky for a moment before allowing her eyes to drift closed. One of her legs was rested straight across the ground while the other was bent at the knee. Her arms folded on her stomach. It was relaxing, even though her instincts didn’t like her lack of alertness. But really, what did she have to worry about? She doubted that any of her classmates would bother her. Besides, a majority of them had probably done into town for the day or were hanging out in their dorm rooms. In the girl’s mind, she was alone had no reason to feel uncomfortable.

LIKE A SILVERBLADE, I CUT MY WAY OUT OF CONTROLBUT DON'T YOU KNOWSOME KNIVES WILL CUT YOU STRAIGHT TO THE BONE------------------------------------------------------------------ It was one of those late September days when it seemed as if the seasons hadn´t quite decided which way to turn yet. The sky was a brilliant blue color, and the slight chill in the air was the only thing that gave any indication that summer was moving towards fall. Lucas hated it. Autumn at the Academy always reminded him that he was in for yet another year at Power's, rather than being back in California where he belonged. His parents would only ever allow him to come home during the summer months when school was out. At all other times of the year he was expected to work at managing his "issues" out of their sight. To say that his weekend so far hadn´t met his parents expectations would be a severe understatement, however. After an entirely unproductive Friday afternoon, he had spent the whole morning in bed watching reruns of old American sitcoms on his television, glad that his two newfound roommates had been nowhere in sight. Up until this year he had had the luxury of having a whole dorm room to his own disposal. In truth this had never been something he had given much thought about either way, merely because he considered it to be a given fact of life. Suddenly having two other boys showing up with a note proclaiming them to be his new roommates had been far from a pleasant way of starting the new term. If he had thought the man would give a damn, Lucas might have called his father and demanded to have the offending boys removed. As it were he had settled for threatening to do so, and gave the clear instruction that his things were to be left alone. So far he hadn't seen much of either though, so any outright confrontation had been avoided so far.
Around mid-day one of them came back, however. Lucas didn´t know which, seeing as he hadn´t bothered with learning their names yet. To him they were merely a temporary nuisance, and he still clung firmly to the hope that they would go away if he just treated them with enough hostility. Either way, their entrance was his queue to leave. He wasn´t interested in partaking in any attempt at bonding which might follow. Instead he found his way to the library, a place he would very nearly never visit normally. Unfortunately his neglected homework from the last couple of weeks had grown into a pile that would soon meet the requirements to classify as a small mountain, however. Whether he liked it or not he needed to at least make an attempt at shifting the load. Although Lucas was far from enthusiastic in regards to his school work, he easily preferred algebra to spending his weekends in detention. Getting through his assignments took the better part of the day. It wasn't that the work was particularly challenging per se; regardless of what most of his teachers at the Academy though Lucas was actually quite bright, but every other minute his attention would drift off subject and he would forget whatever it was that he had been meant to do. Around the forth time he caught himself drawing shapeless doodles in the margin of his notebook rather than finishing the report from last week's Physics experiment, he decided to call it a night, even though it was technically still in the early hours of the afternoon.
Packing his text books away none the less, he threw his school bag across the shoulder and went out into the golden September sunlight. Initially he had meant to head back to his dorm room again, but once he found himself in front of the inviting green square of the front yard, he decided to stay outside for a while instead. Locating his iPod from the front pocket of his bag, he plugged the headset in and let the music fill his head. He lay down on the grass, using his stuff as a makeshift pillow, and glanced around himself carelessly. Only then did he spot the dark haired girl who lay just a few feet away from himself with her eyes closed, looking as if she was sleeping. Frowning at his lack of observance Lucas used the opportunity to study the other student a bit closer. She looked like she was about his own age, perhaps a year younger, considering the fact that he couldn't remember having seen her in any of his classes. For a while he simply lay still and listened to his music while watching the presumably sleeping girl. After a few minutes of inactivity, boredom began to set in, however. He had spent the whole day in his own company, and at the moment he wouldn't really mind talking to someone else. Pushing himself up into a sitting position he located a pebble on the otherwise meticulously kept lawn. Twirling it in between his fingers thoughtfully he took a second to at least pretend to consider whether this was a good idea or not. Before his conscience could wake up enough to protest, however, he directed the small stone into the air and sent it flying directly into the unknown girls shoulder. It wouldn´t hurt her much, but it would at the very least get her attention. Fighting down the urge to smile, Lucas shifted a little to see if he had succeeded in startling her.
