Hm... if she ever mentions the abuse, or acts scared, Nathan might not like her. He wasn't exactly abused, but his father is afraid to touch anybody, hence Nathan is as well. His mother left when he was small, so his home life was sort of cold. If he saw that reflected in Carlie, he might hate her just for being too similar to him, because he doesn't like himself.
