Kestrel cannot control her power very well yet, as she has just discovered it. She will be able to look like other people when her power is more developed, but at the moment, she is only slightly able to resemble them while still looking like herself.

She doesn't like to wear shorts, but sometimes will with tights under them. She does like to wear "indie" type shirts and sometimes accessories. Her favourite colours to wear are blue and black and she is rarely seen wearing bright colours. Kestrel has a fondness for necklaces. She rarely wears make-up, and then only cola-flavoured lip gloss and eyeliner.

- Swimming, and anything to do with water. Kestrel can swim, but she is so terrified of swimming that she panics whenever she is near water. She finds even taking a bath scary.
- Having no identity. Kestrel's greatest fear is that she won't be able to define who she is as a person.
( S E C R E T S )
- Her twin sister Della died when she was twelve, and her mother believes that it was Kestrel who died, not Della.
- Used to be a compulsive liar, but grew out of it... Mostly.
( O V E R A L L ) Kestrel is a quiet girl. Not to be confused with shy, which is something that she is not. She just doesn't see the point in being one of those girls with heaps of friends who is always smiling. Kestrel has trust issues. She doesn't trust anyone. She prefers to be alone and feels uncomfortable in groups of people. Kestrel isn't one to show emotions. Her face is extremely expressive and she likes to project an emotion for other people to see, but not always what she is really feeling. She likes for people to think that she is easy to read, when in reality, she is not.
Kestrel tries to be nice to people. Apart from the occasional explosive temper tantrum at somebody, Kestrel is usually friendly. She is kind, but only if approached by the other person first. She never makes the first move in anything, whether it be first to answer questions in class, first to get on a bus, asking someone out, etc. She watches and waits for other people to do things, so she knows how to react.
She likes to people-watch. Kestrel finds people fascinating, and she has a secret love for sitcoms. She isn't very social and prefers to watch other people live their lives than actually live hers. When her power develops a little more, she may start pretending that she is actually another person and try to live their life.

( O V E R A L L ) Kestrel Jade Avery was born on a cold winter morning in June at Hamilton Hospital in New Zealand. She was a triplet, though the youngest girl didn't survive past her first day due to being too small. Kestrel was never told that she has another sister, and grew up believing that she and her sister Della were simply twins.
The small town where Kestrel lived was a quiet place, and far away from the city. Kestrel went to a small country school, and hated it. She wasn't the most intelligent child in the class and she simply didn't see the point in going to school every day. Her sister, Della, was academic and Kestrel always felt inferior to her older twin. Della was also popular and athletic and, in Kestrel's eyes, perfect in every way. Cora Avery treated Della as the favourite child and Kestrel always felt second-best to her perfect sister.
One Christmas morning, Kestrel's dad decided to go out and get some milk. He never came back after that. Kestrel didn't know where he had gone, but it surprised her that she didn't really care. Cora obviously did care that David had left them. Cora became more of a perfectionist, causing Kestrel to feel even worse about her grades. Della started to become more daring and take stupid risks.
When the twins were twelve, they went to the local aquatic centre with some friends. Della had been nice to Kestrel that day, almost unnervingly so. Kestrel had no friends, and Della had many. They agreed to swap places for the day. That was the day that Della drowned.
It was an accident, there had been no life guards watching the pools because that was what parents were supposed to do: watch their own children. Della was taken to hospital, but it was already too late. Everybody thought it was Kestrel who had drowned, not Della. Nobody would listen to Kestrel's protests. They all thought that she was just scared and confused. Even Cora didn't believe her. Cora didn't want to believe her. She had already lost her baby twelve years ago, and she couldn't face losing her favourite daughter. Because Della was her favourite, not Kestrel. Kestrel was the shadow, nothing more.
Kestrel went to her own funeral when she was twelve. It was the worst day of her life. Della wasn't truely dead, according to the rest of the world. Kestrel was the dead twin. After a while, Kestrel accepted that she couldn't be herself anymore. She had to be Della. As much as she hated it, she hated seeing Cora upset. Cora was totally insane, and Kestrel had begun to realize it. But Kestrel needed her mother, seeing as she didn't have a father anymore.
A year after Della's death, Kestrel found out what had happened to her dad. It seemed that he hadn't died like Kestrel had assumed. He had left the country and gone to live in America with his new wife and her children. David wanted custody of Kestrel, so she would live with him. Kestrel was furious at him, but she agreed to go and live with him in California. She couldn't face Cora, as broken and insane as her mother was now.
Kestrel discovered that she was different from other people when she was thirteen. She noticed it when she was reading a magazine and her dark hair began turning that same blond colour as a celebrity. She had been wishing that she had pretty hair like the actress, and suddenly she did.
She was accepted into Powers Academy, and went there gladly. Anything to get away from her stupid father and his model of a wife. She hated his new children too. They were stupid and petty, spoilt rich kids all the way. She was ready for a new life. And hopefully, she could be Kestrel again.

Lee felt terrible, as she always did every second of her life. It was getting worse for her now that she had almost totally run out of money. The old woman's purse that she had swiped earlier that day had a few hundred in it. Lee supposed that a lot of old people didn't trust banks. Lee sat on the bed of her hotel room, flicking through the wad of cash in her hands. The hotel she was staying in was clean, and that was really all she could say about it. The walls were a yellow colour that reminded Lee of vomit, and the duvet matched. She had a lovely view of a brick wall and some graffiti, and there was a wonderful alleyway complete with trashcans if she looked down. To say her hotel room wasn't the greatest was an understatement, but it was cheap. And that was enough for Lee. Her waitressing job didn't pay out a lot, but she hadn't expected it to. Maybe if she had stayed in school, she could have been okay. But Lee couldn't stay in school. She couldn't go home. I have no home. She though dully. The words echoed in her head as she put the stolen wallet safely away in her backpack.
Lee began to pace around the two square metres of the room unoccupied with ugly furnature. She thought about her options. That only took a second for her when she figured out that she didn't have any. She was a seventeen year old girl. She had no parents, no family to turn to, nothing at all. She was completly alone.
