The students of Power's Academy were kept, for the most part, cut off from the outside world. Because of this, Nathan had no idea what the people on the other side of the gate thought of him, and therefore had no reason to care if they saw him commanding a dragon.
It was a large, majestic creature, nothing like the cumbersome beasts that stories always cast as hoarders of gold. No, this dragon was lithe and strong, covered in sleek silver scales that shone in the dim autumn sunlight. Its body twisted in the air, effortlessly obeying his every command. With the twist of a wrist, it wound itself into a loop, then dipped down towards the ground to follow the arc of his arm.
This wasn't the easiest use of his power, or the most practical, by far, but it was one of his favorite things to do. Whenever he had spare time, Nathan loved to sneak out on his own and practice his gift. Yes, a gift. He, unlike most of the others at school, enjoyed having powers, or at least, he would once he had them under control. Visual illusion was the easiest to handle, but he was slowly working on the others. If he concentrated, he could sometimes make people think they heard voices, soft whispers from nowhere, but it would take a lot of practice to make his powers really useful. As it was, they tended to go off randomly, and the only one he had any control over was visuals.
Still, it was tiring. The dragon lowered itself to the ground and wrapped itself into a coil at his feet as he leaned against the wall. What a workout, both mentally and physically.

One advantage, the only one, actually, of having a power as unpredictable as it was dangerous, was that when Jazzy wanted out of a class, she got out of a class. Her power was provenly more erratic when she was stressed or upset, so teachers generally didn't want to risk that unless Miss Mays were around. So when she said that she wasn't feeling that well and politely asked her English teacher if she could leave class for the rest of the period, the elderly woman was happy to oblige. Then there was the idiot in the back of the classroom that had commented as Jazzy walked by him to the door, saying that if Jazzy wanted to, she could be the evil dictator of the world. No one would try to oppose her. And then of course, the one time that Jazzy actually wanted to control her power and use it, she couldn't. Didn't that just suck. Jazzmyne could afford to miss a bit of school. She got great grades, because focusing on what the teacher was saying gave her a distraction from the people around her and helped her keep her power in control. Despite being a year younger than most of the students in her grade, she was in the top percentage of the students in all of her classes. Not that she was really bragging about that. She'd rather be an idiot who could read minds than a torturing genius. But still she wasn't concerned about skipping classes. When she needed a break she needed a break. She left the largest brick building on campus, the high school, and stood on the stone steps leading down from the front door for a while, looking around. There were the odd bunches of seniors and juniors who had spares at the moment grouped here and there on the front lawn, but overall it was pretty quiet. Jazzy wanted to get as far away from all of the other people as possible, though. Her first choice of location would be the forest where people rarely went, but over the last week it had seemed to become a more popular place. Maybe as far away from the school as she could get, then? Yeah, that sounded pretty good. So she headed off in the direction of the front gates, a place where students rarely went unless they were intent on sneaking out to St. Michael's. She was almost at the front gates when she saw it; the huge beast that looked like something jumped from the pages of a fantasy book. Jazzmyne was far too practical to believe that this was a real dragon; or rather she was too learned about powers to think that dragons were the most obvious explanation, but she didn't bother to look around for the producer of the strange animal. She approached it closer, not really paying attention to anything or anyone around her, until she was a few metres away from the giant beast. "Now that's amazing."[/blockquote][/blockquote] Baby Look At Me! HERE And Tell Me What You See! DONE! You Ain't Seen The Best Of Me Yet! 614 I'll Make You Forget The Rest! Nathan leaned heavily against the wall, catching his breath. His grey eyes were closed as he took deep breaths, slowing his breathing back to a normal rhythm. After such exertion, it was an effort to get his body back under control. Still, he knew he needed to do things like that. After all the times he'd lost control of his powers, he knew that working out with them was the only way he'd gain control of them. Learning his limits was how he would learn to push them, and exhausting himself would build up endurance.
He slowly sank to a sitting position and held out a hand. Without looking, he knew that the dragon had touched its head to his hand, but he couldn't feel it at all. Of course he couldn't. Touch was the hardest sense for him to control, and he'd only done it a few times on accident. He could barely control what people saw or heard, let alone what they tasted or felt, and for some reason, smell was beyond him altogether. It would be a long time before he could make this dragon seem "real" to anyone, even himself.
Then he heard a girl's voice. He opened his eyes and sat up straight, alarmed. How had he not heard her? One thing he'd always prided himself on was his mastery of his own senses. As soon as he'd discovered his gift to manipulate other people's, he'd made sure that he could always trust his own eyes and ears. He noticed things, little details that most others didn't, things he could use to make his illusions seem like fact. But somehow he hadn't heard her approach, and that made him nervous. What was her power? Some sort of stealth?
He stood up and brushed grass from his pants. The dragon slowly faded into nothingness, leaving only a tired Nathan and the girl in front of him. "Hey, what're you doing out here?"

Jazzmyne almost felt like pouting like a young child as the majestic creature slowly faded away into oblivion. She'd never actually seen anything like it before, but fantasy and mythology books had been among her favorites when she was younger, before she got into music so much and read a lot more than she currently did. To see a dragon come to life as though straight off of the pages of Eragon or some other surreal book was just amazing. It gave a sense of magicalness to the day and moment. Once the dragon was completely gone and she no longer had anything to focus on, Jazzmyne looked up the illusionist (or at least she assumed that was what she was, she didn't have a very large knowledge of the various types of powers at PA but illusions seemed like the most likely thing to create a dragon out of nothing) to see who he was. To be honest, she didn't have the slightest clue of who he was. He didn't look even vaguely familiar. That didn't mean that she hadn't seen him before, but she didn't think she had. He looked young, definitely not a senior and probably not a junior, but she figured that if he was in her grade he would be in one of her classes and she'd recognize him, so she made a guesstimate of sophomore. She shrugged at his question, not in any hurry to respond because she was still remembering the dragon. Did he want her to leave, or something? She honestly hadn't meant to intrude on his little alone-with-the-dragon time, but she needed her own escape sometimes too. How was she to have known that this area was already taken by another student? "I could ask you the same question," she reminded him with a slight smirk. "I got out of class because I'm a special case. What about you?"[/blockquote][/blockquote] Baby Look At Me! HERE And Tell Me What You See! DONE! Nathan's only answer to her question was a shrug. He hated school. The entire thing was an excuse to pack students together into a building and stop them from causing trouble outside, or bothering any adults that weren't paid to be bothered by them; learning was just a distraction that made parents want to send their children there. He couldn't understand why anyone would want to be there, not when someone could touch him at any moment. He hated being touched more than almost anything else, except for being restrained, and school gave too many opportunities for that to happen. "I'm skipping. Nothing to hide there. I mean, why would I go to class if I'm not going to learn anything? I can teach myself to control my powers better than any generalized lectures. I just need time to practice."
He leaned back against the wall and wiped his face. A bit of sweat ran down his back, and he pressed his back to the wall to stop it. It was a disgusting sensation, to feel it running over his skin, cold and slick, but exertion was necessary if he wanted to improve his control over his powers. It had taken months of practice to be able to make even a little mouse, and now the dragon took mounds of energy. He wouldn't be able to use his powers for a day or two while he recovered, unless he wanted to suffer for it for the next week. "Why? What do you mean, a special case? A skipper, too, or just not taking a class?"

Skipping class just for the hell of it? That kind of seemed ridiculous to Jazzy. Sure she might like her free time away from class, but she knew that she was damaging her education every moment she spent away from the rest of the class while they took notes and discussed things to get the topic drilled into their brains. If she didn't need a break for everyone else's sake once in a while, she'd be in class all of the time, preparing herself for whatever type of future she could manage to get if she ever got her power under control. "Isn't that pretty stupid?" she asked rather bluntly. "You're ruining the only education you'll ever get. Where're you going to go in life if you don't know the basic stuff they teach you here? Not everything is about Powers. If you don't know the basic need-to-know things in life you'll never get to a good college, never get hired, never get money, and therefore die." She frowned at his questions, realizing that she'd opened herself up for inquiry when she'd said she was a special case. She could have said that she was a skipper, but her recent accusation about him ruining his education would make her extremely hypocritical if she lied like that. And freshmen couldn't have any spare classes, their days were booked full of classes so that lie was out to. "I'm just special." Yeah. That really explained a lot. But she wasn't going to go into any more detail with a guy she'd met five seconds earlier. Actually, she wouldn't go into any detail about it with anyone, because that was just plain retarded. Who wanted to know, or even come near, a girl who could have them writhing in pain in five seconds flat? She'd never have a conversation with any student ever again.[/blockquote][/blockquote] Baby Look At Me! HERE And Tell Me What You See! DONE! "Well, you never stopped to ask what class I was skipping, Miss Special Case." Nathan raised an eyebrow, and watched her closely. There was something about this that seemed off to him... maybe it was that little superior hint to her tone when she mentioned that she was special, or maybe he'd just imagined it, but whatever it was, he was wary. She was quick to condemn him for cutting class, even when she was doing the same thing. He couldn't stand a hypocrite, even if they claimed to have a reason for being so. "I'm only skipping power control classes so I can learn on my own, like I said. I never said I skipped anything else."
He stepped away from the wall and straightened up, a subtle gesture of dominance. Nathan was going to make sure he was in control here, before she tried to take over the situation. No way was he going to let her ask all the questions in this scene, especially not when he had a few specific questions for this girl. "So you're 'special'?" he repeated. "Last I checked, everyone at this school is 'special', and that doesn't get any of us out of classes for free. That's a nice try, but I'd appreciate it if you put a little effort into your lies, or should I say half-truths? So talk. What exactly makes you so 'special'?"
